About AI-BIRD
Transforming Coastal Bird Conservation
AI-BIRD represents a breakthrough in ecological monitoring, combining cutting-edge drone technology with advanced artificial intelligence to revolutionize how we survey and protect coastal bird populations.
The Project
Developed through a collaboration between Lumax and Sovon Vogelonderzoek Nederland, AI-BIRD addresses the critical need for efficient, accurate, and non-invasive monitoring of breeding seabird colonies along the Dutch coast.
Our Mission
To provide conservation scientists and land managers with powerful tools that:
- Dramatically reduce survey time and effort
- Increase accuracy and consistency of population counts
- Minimize disturbance to breeding birds
- Enable long-term trend analysis through standardized data collection
Applications
AI-BIRD supports a wide range of conservation activities:
- Population counts — Accurate census of breeding pairs
- Nest monitoring — Track nesting success over time
- Breeding productivity — Assess reproductive output
- Colony tracking — Monitor colony dynamics and expansion
- Long-term trends — Build datasets for climate and conservation research
Partners
AI-BIRD is developed by Lumax in collaboration with Sovon Vogelonderzoek Nederland, bringing together expertise in drone-based ecological surveys, machine learning, computer vision, and ornithological research.
